BIRMINGHAM – They are considered the better golf teams in all of college golf, and the first and second round scores are proving they can play. Going into Tuesday’s third and final round of the University of Alabama’s Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, eight of the twelve teams were under par on the par 70 course at Old Overton Club.
Clemson led the field at 12 under par, shooting identical team scores of 278-278/556 in the morning and afternoon rounds on Monday. Texas is in second place at 6-under par (562). TCU is third at five under (563), UNLV and Wake Forest are tied at fourth at four under (564). Arizona and Georgia Tech are tied at sixth at three under par (565). Alabama is eighth at one under par (290-277/567). Auburn is ninth at twelve over par (580), Oklahoma is tenth (581), Southern Cal is 11th (587) and UAB is twelfth (595).
“We had a slow start,” said University of Alabama head men’s golf coach Jay Seawell. “But I was real proud of how we finished.”
Arizona’s Chris Nallen (69-66/135) leads the field of individuals at seven under par, a stroke ahead of Clemson’s D.J. Trahan (66-70/136) and UNLV’s Ryan Moore (66-70/136) who are tied at second at six under par.
Alabama has three golfers among the top twenty, including Wesley Pate who is tied at 17th. Pate birdied the first and last hole in the first round and shot 69 along the way and put that with a 72 in the second round. He is one under par going into the third and final round. Lars Brovold is tied at 20th with a day that included following a 75 in the morning round with a three under 67 in the afternoon. Brovold is at even par (142). Clint Provost is a shot back and in sole possession of 24th. Provost shot 75-68/143 and is one over. Tied at 27th is Austin Hynson who parred the morning round (71) and shot 74 in the afternoon. And Lance Walker clipped six strokes off his game from morning to afternoon, shooting 76-70/146. He’s tied at 35th.
“I was very proud of Wesley. He’s been working hard. He’s playing the way he should be playing. The other players on the team also showed that they’ve worked hard as well, and we hope that Tuesday we can move up some more with some more under par scores.”
Tee times for Tuesday morning find Arizona, Wake Forest and UNLV going off on hole one at 8:00 a.m. The next wave on that hole will be at 8:50 a.m. with TCU, Texas and Clemson.. UAB, Southern Cal and Oklahoma State will go off on hole 10 at 8:00 a.m. followed by Auburn, Alabama and Georgia Tech on that hole beginning at 8:50 a.m.
