KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Alabama men’s golf team opened its 2002-03 season here with a fourth place finish among 15 teams at the Cleveland Golf Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. Host team College of Charleston won the tournament on its home course, the par 72 Turtle Point, shooting 293-288-298/879. The tournament began on Monday with two rounds and concluded with the third round Tuesday.
“I’m disappointed in how we finished the last hole today,” said University of Alabama head men’s golf coach Jay Seawell. “We played pretty good all day except on that last hole. We played it well over par and that cost us a position for a better finish. But all in all it was a good tournament, a successful first tournament.”
Alabama’s Lars Brovold finished among the top ten individuals. He shot 72-74-75/221 to finish tied at 10th. His teammate, Clint Provost, finished tied at 16th (78-70-74/222). True freshman Daniel Creel of Florence made his collegiate debut and finished tied at 27th (77-70-79/226). Rounding out Alabama’s lineup were Mac Butler (73-82-78/233) who finished tied at 47th and true freshman Sean Szerencsits, also making his debut, who finished tied at 55th (79-80-76/235).
In the final team standings, Charleston was the team champion (879), followed by Ole Miss (887), Virginia Tech (896), Alabama (292-303-301/897), Baylor (899), Kentucky (901), Vanderbilt (902), South Carolina-Aiken (905), Florida State (906), Kent State (907), Tulsa (914), N.C. State (916), South Carolina, Maryland and LSU (920).
Alabama returns to competitive play next Monday, September 16, when it travels to Franklin, Tenn. to compete in Vanderbilt’s Mason Rudolph Men’s Golf Championship. That tournament will play the first 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday at the Legends Club (Roper’s Knob).
