TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama men's golf team, led by Lars Brovold's 72.80 stroke average after two tournaments, travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., this weekend for the 2003 Franklin Street Partners Invitational.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins with a practice round on Thursday followed by the first 18 holes of tournament play on Friday, October 3. It concludes with the final 18 holes on Sunday. The University of North Carolina is the host school. Golf fans can keep up with play in the tournament through live scoring at the website www.golfstat.com. Participating teams include Alabama, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, and UNC Wilmington.
"We're excited about going because we haven't been playing very well," said Alabama head men's golf coach Jay Seawell, "and anytime you haven't played well, it's always good to get back to playing. We're going to start two true freshmen this week, and I'm really excited to see how Max Alverio does in his first time out. And I expect good things from Stewart (Whitt) after he's had a week to figure out what college golf is all about. I'm looking forward to watching how those two react to college golf. I guess that adds a little bit of eagerness to this tournament, too."
The five golfers participating in the tournament for Alabama are Brovold, who has two top 25 finishes in two tournaments played this fall, including his 12th place finish last week at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph; Mobile's Austin Hynson will make his first tournament appearance of the season. Hynson played in 10 tournaments for the Tide last season and finished as high as 13th at the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational at the Capstone Club. Clint Provost will play at three, Whitt at four and Alverio at five. Whitt, a freshman from Athens, played in the Mason Rudolph. Alverio is making his first appearance in an Alabama lineup.
