TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - October is startup month for the Alabama rowing team. Last week every one of the 29 member of the 2008-09 Varsity squad got the season started when three 8+ boats, four 4+ boats and a doubles scull competed at the Chattanooga Head Race.
This year's varsity is very young, with more than half (15 in all) of the squad making their Varsity debut in Chattanooga after spending last year on the Novice squad including Amy Allison, Helen Barnes, Daniella Barone, Camille Campbell, Chelsea Collins, Amelia Houghton, Lauren Hovey, Christine Kapurch, Sara Leibold, Lauren Miller, Rachel Roberts, Laura Skaggs, Ebony Smith, Katie Smith and Mary Vlasis.
This week Alabama looks even younger as the Novice squad makes its season debut, sending two 8+ crews to Huntsville, Ala. to compete at the Hobbs Island Regatta. Racing for the Crimson Tide for the first time will be Sarah Cleveland, Veronica Wilson, Christine Saucier, Allie Wettelands, Kristen Iverson, Blake Reed, Lara Bullock, Audrey White and Meredith Wildes in one boat with Paige Storey, Erika Baraneck, Leigh Ann Terch, Jessica Allaway, Bianca Arrington, Stephanie Varner, Lindsey Kent, Valerie Vargas and Caroline Powell in the other.
The Varsity will also be in action this weekend, sending an 8+ boat to the legendary Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass. The Tide earned a silver medal at last year's regatta, an outstanding achievement in just its second season as an NCAA Division I program
