
Godwin to Play in B Draw Finals at Southern Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - Shelley Godwin won two matches Sunday to advance to the "B" draw finals at the ITA Southern Regional Championships held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Sunday also saw the Crimson Tide duo of Meritt Emery and Alice Tunaru compete in the "B" draw doubles final.
"Shelley did an excellent job today battling through the quarterfinals and semifinals," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "She has really picked it up this weekend and gained confidence with each match."
In Godwin's quarterfinal match, she took the first set 6-3 before edging South Florida's Lauren Shumate 7-6(2) in the second. Godwin dropped the opening set of her semifinal match to Valeriya Makarycheva of Mississippi State 1-6, and earned a 6-4 win in the second. Godwin then outlasted Makarycheva 1-0(10) in the tiebreak to win the match. Godwin is scheduled to play another Bulldog in the finals Sunday in Natalie Mayuk.
In doubles play, Emery and Tunaru handed Jacksonville's Fernanda Carrero and Juliana Umeki an 8-1 loss in the "B" draw semifinals before suffering an 8-6 loss in the finals to Alessa Waibel and Jenna Osborne of Miami.
The ITA Southern Regionals will conclude Monday with the "A" draw singles semifinal and finals, the "A" draw doubles finals and the "B" draw singles finals.
