TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Consistently among the nation's top gymnasts, Alabama sophomore Kassi Price was recognized as one of the nation's best in the classroom as well today when she was named an Academic All-American.
Price, who helped lead Alabama to a sixth place national finish this spring, was named to the 2008 ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-America Women's At-Large Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The at-large team covers student-athletes from 13 NCAA Division I sports.
"Kassi's success in both the gym and the classroom is a testament to her tremendous work ethic and dedication," Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said. "She strives every day to be the best she can be and that effort continues to pay dividends in ways both large and small. We are very proud of her and all that she has accomplished."
Price carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average in business and is a two-time Academic All-SEC honoree. A member of Gamma Beta Phi, Lambda Sigma, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Sigma Alpha Lambda and Alpha Lambda Delta honoraries and a C&BA Scholar-Athlete, Price also earned Alabama's Economics Freshman Achievement Award.
In the gym, she earned All-American honors as a freshman and sophomore on the uneven bars and won the balance beam and uneven bars at the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional Championships. A second team All-SEC selection this year, she won the uneven bars title in nine of 11 regular season meets as a sophomore and won the all-around four times.
She is the eighth Alabama gymnast to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, which requires student-athletes to be a sophomore or better in academic standing and carry at least a 3.2 GPA. Price joins Stephanie Kite (2004, 2003), Kristin Sterner (2003), Merritt Booth (1998), Meredith Willard (1997), Dana Dobransky (1993, 1992), Kelly Good (1988) and Julie Estin (1987, 1986). Kite was the 2004 Academic All-American At-Large Team Member of the Year.
