MALIBU, Calif. - Women's tennis pair Paulina Bigos and Tiffany Welcher cruised to the qualifying draw of the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship Sunday with a set of 8-2 wins in both the round of 16 and quarterfinals.
"Paulina and Tiffany have capitalized on their opportunities at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, said head coach Jenny Mainz. "They have worked their way through the pre-qualifying draw beating three quality doubles tandems from Texas, Princeton and North Carolina State. Paulina and Tiffany are doing an outstanding job of representing Alabama and gaining national exposure at this collegiate Grand Slam event. They are certainly a capable team that has the tools to continue advancing through the draw. We are proud of them."
In their opening match of the day, Bigos and Welcher met up with Princeton's Rachel Saiontz and Lauren McHale for the Tide's first 8-2 victory. In the quarterfinals, Alabama topped the N.C. State duo of Berkeley Brock and Lenka Hojickova.
Welcher also competed in the pre-qualifying singles draw where she fell shy of continuing in the tournament dropping a tough, three-set match to Northwestern's Nazlie Ghazal 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (1).
Bigos and Welcher will face Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong Tuesday.
