CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Alabama rowing team posted a top-10 finish in the Club 8+ race on day one of the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass., Saturday. The Crimson Tide's Second Varsity 8+ crew took ninth place overall out of 30 boats in the Club 8+ race and was sixth among collegiate teams.
"It was a solid race for a young crew," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "We might have been able to squeeze out another boat length."
The Tide, with a crew that consisted of coxswain Kiffy Balchon and rowers Daniella Barone, Lauren Miller, Sydney Sutton, Brianne Hadar, Lynsey Marshall, Jessica Parker, Hannah Merrill and Sarah Eadon, crossed the finish line with a time of 18:47.2.
"Kiffy did a good job of managing the course and the race," Davis said. "She took the turns well and was not intimidated by the course or the conditions. Overall, I'd say we rose to the challenge today."
Davis said he was pleased overall with the performance his Second Varsity 8+ put forth, especially considering its youth, with seven of the nine student-athletes coming from the freshman and sophomore class.
Alabama returns to action Sunday when the First Varsity 8+ takes to the water in the Championship 8+ race.
"Our ladies are hungry to see where they matchup," Davis said. "The competition is going to be tough with crews from Yale, Virginia and Stanford, who have medaled at the NCAA Championships, but we're looking forward to the challenge."
Coxswain Paige Storey and rowers Bianca Arrington, Alissa Kranz, Laura Skaggs, Kristen Iverson, Jessie Allaway, Kendall Williamson, Erika Baranek and Jennifer Johnson, will race against some of the nation's top crews Sunday.
