Jerry Cargile, Former Crimson Tide Sprinter and Relay Star

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama track & field program this week mourned the loss of former track athlete Jerry Cargile, who passed away on Tuesday, October 21, at the age of 63.
A native of Leeds, Alabama, Jerry Cargile was one of the most accomplished relay sprinters in Crimson Tide history having run on relay quartets that won the 1972 SEC Outdoor titles in the 440-yard relay (40.3 seconds) and the mile relay (3 minutes, 10.3 seconds). Cargile also ran on relay units that swept the 440-yard and mile relays at the 1972 SEC indoor meet, winning the 440 relay in 49.4 and the mile relay in 3:16.5. That 1972 relay team qualified for competition at the 1972 NCAA Indoor Championships and the 1972 United States Olympic Trials.
Upon graduation from Alabama, Cargile served in the U.S. Air Force. A member of Leeds First Baptist Church. Jerry is survived by his wife, Nancy Ingram Cargile; a son, Jason Scott Cargile; his mother, Annie Abercrombie Cargile; two brothers, John and Jimmy Cargile. and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were conducted on Thursday, October 23, at Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations can be made to the Birmingham Humane Society or the United Way of Central Alabama.
