BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Behind the play of clubhouse leader Tom Lovelady, the Alabama men's golf team is in first overall after 36 holes of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, being played at Shoal Creek Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
In all, Alabama has three golfers (Lovelady, Robby Shelton and Gavin Moynihan) among the top five individuals in the event.
"It should be fun tomorrow," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "This is a new team so it will be good to see how they react with the lead, how the guys can handle it. I am confident they will handle it, but they need to have a good game plan and stick to it. We just need to play Alabama golf and see what happens. It will be fun."
After carding a 2-under par 70 during the opening 18 holes, Lovelady scorched the second round, firing a career-low round of 66. He finished the day with an 8-under 136 and leads Memphis' Cory Gaylord and North Florida's Joey Petronio by three strokes coming into Tuesday's final round.
"I thought Tom did a great job today," Seawell said. "Anytime you shoot 66 at Shoal Creek you're doing something right. I'm proud of the way he played. He's had a nice warmup in the first two tournaments and you could feel this type of performance was coming."
Shelton, in fourth overall, is just behind Lovelady after carding a 2-under 140 (67-73) on the par 72, 7,264-yard Shoal Creek Country Club course. Moynihan, who is making his first appearance in Alabama's lineup after playing in the 2014 World Amateur Team Championship earlier this month, is in a tie for fifth overall at 141 (70-71).
Freshman Tyler Hitchner is tied for 31st after carding a 149 (74-75), while sophomore Robby Prater rounds out the Tide with a 155 (79-76) to place 50th overall.
Alabama leads second place and North Florida (572) by six strokes going into Tuesday's final round. Tournament-host and 19th-ranked UAB (574) is in third, while Ole Miss (578) and Memphis (578) round out the top five.
The Tide will be paired with North Florida and UAB during Tuesday's final 18 holes. Prater will get the Tide's round started off Hole No. 1 at 8:24 a.m. CT.
