FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Alabama men's and women's cross country teams finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at the 2016 SEC Cross Country Championships at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark. on Friday.
"That was an incredibly gutsy run by our men today," head coach Dan Waters said. "We walked in with kids sick and nursing injuries. It was a super-competitive race and I couldn't be prouder of the way they finished. It was our worst day physically but our best day mentally. That mental edge was why we were able to finish where we did so I'm very pleased.
"On the women's side, we knew that was going to be a very tight race, finishing tied for fifth place is a good run for us. I thought, again, they ran their hearts out and had a great mental race. To have three freshmen score was great and they all ran savvy races. It's great to have them in the program for three more years."
In the men's 8,000-meter race, the Tide's fifth place finish is the team's best since finishing tied for fifth in 2011. Senior Antibahs Kosgei was the Tide's top runner, finishing eighth in 24:06.4. Fellow senior Robbie Farnham-Rose finished 20th in 24:54.8. Junior Josh Short finished 43rd in a personal-best 25:32.80. Senior Conner Thompson was 44th in 25:34.2. Senior Evan Prizy finished 53rd in 25:51.00 to complete the scoring for Alabama.
Other men's finishers were junior Andrew Bull (75th, 26:25.20); freshman J.P. Brinyark (76th, 26:30.30); freshman Patrick Grant (78th, 26:38.40) and sophomore Clay Austell (93rd, 27:12.60).
In the women's 6,000-meter race, Vanderbilt and Alabama tied for fifth with 170 points but the Commodores were officially awarded fifth place based on where each team's runners finished in the individual standings. The finish is the fourth consecutive top six finish for the Alabama women at the SEC championships (6th-2013, 4th- 2014, 3rd- 2015).
Alabama freshman McKenzie Yanek finished 22nd overall in a time of 21:13.20 to lead the Crimson Tide. Senior Hannah Waggoner was Alabama's second runner, finishing 27th in 21:22.70. Hannah Capek was 34th at 21:28.00. Freshman Elisabeth Danis finished 47th in 21:55.60. Junior Caroline Barlow rounded out the scoring for Alabama, finishing 55th in 22:00.60.
Other Tide finishers were junior Emily Edwards (58th, 22:05.70); freshman Rebecca Buteau (71st, 22:17.50); junior Jessica Gray (73rd, personal-best 22:18.10); sophomore Nicole Gardner (79th, 22:26.80); sophomore Calli Coggins (93rd, 22:51.20); freshman Brittany Tolson (94th, 22:51.70) and sophomore Sarah Mohan (104th, 23:06.60)
Both teams will be off until the NCAA South Region Championships, set for Nov. 13, in Tallahassee, Fla.
