Crimson Tide finishes two day, 54-hole event with a 1-2 record
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Alabama men's golf team closed its 2016 fall season on a high note Tuesday with a victory over No. 15 Georgia in the final round of the Cypress Point Classic, which was held at the par-72, 6,509-yard Alister MacKenzie course at Cypress Point Club.
The sixth-seeded Crimson Tide defeated the fourth-seeded Bulldogs by a score of 13.5-10.5 in singles play, which marked the final round the unique tournament that featured a match play-style format. Each of the six players competing on a team could earn up to four points each match.
"What an amazing experience we had," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "We played one of the greatest golf courses in the world and we were able to compete in a match play tournament, which was a great learning experience. To that end, the trip was a huge success. I wish we would've played better (Monday), but beating Georgia today was a good way to finish."
Alabama was led on the day by redshirt freshman Josh Sedeno and junior Steven Setterstrom, who each shut out his opponent, 4-0, during Tuesday's 18 holes. Sedeno topped Jaime Lopez Rivarola, while Setterstrom defeated Trevor Phillips. Junior Tyler Hitchner was nearly as impressive, recording a 3.5-0.5 victory over Zach Healy.
Senior Robby Prater split his match against David Mackey, 2-2, while sophomore Davis Riley and junior Lee Hodges both fell by a score of 4-0.
Alabama closed the eight-team event with a 1-2 mark after falling to third-seeded and 11th-ranked USC in four-ball play and No. 2 seed and No. 8 ranked Wake Forest on Monday.
"Hopefully today's performance will give us a little momentum as we head into the offseason," Seawell said. "We are still a team in transition a little bit, trying to find the confidence and ability to play at a high level. We will use our offseason to work on that."
Alabama will return to action when it competes at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 19-21, which will mark the first tournament of the spring season.
