TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama cross country teams will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., next week for the 2016 NCAA South Regional, set for Friday, Nov. 11, at Apalachee Regional Park. Florida State University will serve as this year's host institution.
Individually, senior Antibahs Kosgei will be seeking to repeat as the South region men's individual champion after winning the title a year ago at the 2015 championships in Tuscaloosa. With a victory, Kosgei would become just the second repeat champion in Alabama cross country history, joining David Kimani (2000-01-02). Kimani and Kosgei are the only Tide runners to win individual regional titles.
The Alabama men's team will be seeking its eighth regional title (1999-2000-01-07-08-09-10) while the women's team will be in search of its second NCAA regional title (1986).
In the Rankings
The Crimson Tide women remained at No. 4 and the men remained at No. 5 in their respective U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region rankings released Oct. 31.
Kosgei, Yanek Earn All-SEC Honors
Senior Antibahs Kosgei and freshman McKenzie Yanek received All-SEC honors for their performances at the SEC Championships on Oct. 28 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Kosgei's eighth-place finish at the championships earned him a spot on the men's All-SEC second team. The honor is the second for Kosgei, who was a first team selection a year ago after winning the men's individual title at the 2015 championships in College Station, Texas.
Yanek was named to the women's SEC All-Freshman team after her 22nd-place finish in Fayetteville. The Bettendorf, Iowa native was Alabama's top finisher for the second meet in a row at the SEC Championships and is the fifth Alabama runner to earn women's All-Freshman honors.
