Siblings often go out of their way to separate themselves from their brothers or sisters. This can be especially true for twins. However, that is not the case for Alabama cross country teammates – and twin brothers – Andrew and Garrett Bull. The duo share many similarities but still have their own unique traits that make them who they are today.
Andrew, an accounting major, and Garrett, a biology major, attended Brentwood Academy in Nashville, Tenn. beginning in the seventh grade. They began their athletic careers at the school in separate sports before they both found their way to the cross country team.
"I went out one day to try cross country. I wasn't planning on sticking with it," Garrett said. "At the time, I thought about playing football, but I didn't do that."
For Andrew, the story was similar. He played soccer as a youngster before deciding to commit to running.
After running throughout their high school careers, the Bulls both wanted to compete collegiately. The two demonstrated that they did not have to go to the same school together, but something about The University of Alabama stuck out to them.
"I looked into the track program. I had looked at other schools, but Alabama caught my eye," Andrew said. "Alabama sold itself."
The Bulls enrolled at The Capstone in 2014 ready to take on the new chapter of their lives. When asked about what it means to be a part of the team at Alabama, they both agreed that they enjoy working hard to be team players on the course. Both are competitive, and explain that they find excitement when their team can defy the odds.
"[Beating expectations] is one of the best feelings. You go in and people put you in a box as to what you should do," Andrew said. "It feels good to prove people wrong when you do better than expected."
Doing their best at every meet and defying the odds is a motivator for both twins. In fact, they both share a common bond that also helps motivate them. They can run with each other.
"You always have someone to run with. It's encouraging to run [with Andrew]," Garrett said. "We push each other to be better."
The friendly competition between the two can be found on a constant basis. Whether it be on or off the course, Andrew and Garrett are supporting one another. As long distance runners, they understand what each other is going through; however, when they are competing, they are competing against each other, too.
"I've always had my brother with me," Andrew said. "It feels normal to have [Garrett] on my team. It'd feel weird if he wasn't there."
