TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama soccer team was outlasted by No. 15 Arkansas, 2-1, in a match that was decided in overtime Thursday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex. The Crimson Tide falls to an overall 6-3-1 record and a 1-1-1 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Razorbacks improve to 10-1 and 3-0 in league play.
"Clearly disappointed with the result," said head coach Wes Hart. "Even though that's one of the top teams in the country right now, for us, we want to win every game. I thought we did enough and gave ourselves a chance. I am very proud of the effort these girls gave. We fought with them tooth-and-nail, toe-to-toe, but at the end of the day just not enough. Hats off to Arkansas because they are an excellent team. I am disappointed for my players. Even though it was a loss, it gives us a lot of confidence and lets us know that we can compete. Arkansas is one of the hottest teams in the nation right now and it just lets us know that we are in this and can compete. It gives us a lot of confidence going into the Texas A&M game because we know that we can compete with them.
The first half was a deadlock until two minutes before the half hour mark, when Arkansas's Stefani Doyle converted off a pass from Claire Kelley to give the Razorbacks a 1-0 lead. In the final 17 minutes of the first half both teams were unable to convert, and Arkansas went into intermission with a 1-0 lead. Alabama tallied five shots and two corner kicks in the half. Junior goalkeeper Kat Stratton tallied two saves.
The second half remained a possession battle until the 76th minute, when freshman Keely Cartrett delivered the Tide's equalizer from five yards out off a pass from sophomore Abbie Boswell to tie the match at 1-1. The tying goal marks Cartrett's first career goal with Alabama. Neither team was able to score in the final 14 minutes of regulation which forced an overtime period. The Tide recorded five shots and two corner kicks in the half, while Stratton collected four saves.
In overtime it looked as if there was going to be a second overtime until the 97:03 minute mark, when the Razorbacks' Lendsey Mayo scored from about 15 yards out to clinch the 2-1 Arkansas victory. Alabama only took one shot in overtime.
In the hour and 37 minute contest the Tide collected 11 shots, four shots on goal and five corner kicks. Stratton compiled six saves, and her overall record between the posts moves to 6-3-1 and 1-1-1 in conference play.
The contest was a physical one as there were a total of 25 fouls called and six yellow cards delivered between the two teams.
The Tide returns to action on Sunday night when it takes on the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies at 6 p.m. CT at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
