Crimson Tide to play challenging, yet familiar tournaments in this year’s fall and spring slate
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men's golf head coach Jay Seawell announced the 2017-18 schedule on Thursday which features four fall tournaments and five in the spring. The Crimson Tide's slate features a trip to Puerto Rico for the 14th consecutive year and will return to strong tournaments such as the Southern Highlands Masters and Mason Rudolph Invitational, among others. Alabama will also host the 32nd annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Vestavia Hills, Ala., in the fall.
"Our philosophy has always been to challenge our team with a schedule that will prepare them to win championships," Seawell said. "We will once again play some of the best courses and teams so that our guys will be pushed to be their best week in and week out."
The Crimson Tide will play in a total of four events – two in September and two in October – during the fall season. Alabama starts the year at a tournament it has won three times, the Carpet Capital Collegiate, on Sept. 8-10, which is held at The Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga. The Tide will then travel to Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago to compete in the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 15-17.
The month of October will begin with the annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be held Oct. 9-10 at Old Overton in Vestavia, Hills, Ala. Alabama has won the event in eight of the last 11 years and last season saw senior Lee Hodges finish in third place in the event.
The Tide will then close out the fall season with the Steelwood Collegiate, now in its second season, hosted by South Alabama in Loxley, Ala.
Starting off the spring campaign, Alabama again returns to the Puerto Rico Classic, held at the Rio Mar Country Club, in Rio Mar Beach, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 18-20. Alabama has won the tournament six times in program history.
Alabama then travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Southern Highlands Masters on March 5-7. After that, Alabama will head to Greensboro, Ga., for the Linger Longer Invitational held March 18-20.
Alabama will open the month of April with the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas. This year marks the program's first appearance in the event since the 2012-13 campaign. The Tide is slated to close out the regular season at the Mason Rudolph Championship on April 13-15 in Nashville, Tenn. Alabama has finished in the top three for four straight years, including winning the title in 2014 and last year's season-best second-place result.
Postseason play begins April 21-24 with the SEC Championship held in Sea Island, Ga., at the Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course. NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 14-16, while the golf season will conclude May 25-30 at the NCAA Championships, held at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
