Furr will compete in his first PGA event this weekend
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Wilson Furr will be competing as an amateur in his first career PGA Tour event at the Sanderson Farms Championship beginning Thursday afternoon in Jackson, Miss. Furr automatically qualified for the tournament after winning the Mississippi State Amateur this past June.
Furr, a native of Jackson, will play on his home course, the 7,421-yard, par-72 Country Club of Jackson, during the four day, 72-hole event.
"It's been a goal of mine since I started playing golf to compete in a PGA Tour event," Furr said after earning the automatic bid with his state amateur championship. "The fact that I am playing on my home course in front of all my friends and family is a dream come true."
Furr, who will tee off Thursday's first round at 1:35 p.m. CT, will be competing against the likes of PGA standouts Rory Sabbatini, Stuart Appleby and Retief Goosen, among others. Also competing in the 128-person field are former Alabama players Jason Bohn, Tom Lovelady, Trey Mullinax and Michael Thompson.
It's an opportunity that is not only exciting for Furr, but will greatly benefit his golf game, according to Alabama head coach Jay Seawell.
"I'm excited for him," Seawell said. "He was raised on this golf course so I know it's a childhood dream of his to not only play in a PGA Tour event, but to specifically play in this tournament. This will give him a chance to see where his game stacks against the pros. Anytime you get a chance to play against the best, it serves as indicator of where you are and what you need to do to get better."
Furr has competed in four events for the Crimson Tide during the 2018 fall season. He most recently tied for 10th at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational, helping lead Alabama to a fifth-place finish amongst an impressive field. He also assisted the Tide to the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate team title on Oct. 9 when he tied for 14th overall.
Fans can watch the tournament live starting every day at 1:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday on the Golf Channel. The tournament can also be streamed with a free trial on fuboTV. Fans can keep up-to-date with live scoring at PGATour.com.
