Crimson Tide senior earns award for excelling in academics and community outreach
ATLANTA – Alabama men's golfer Alex Green was the recipient of the fourth annual Tom Cousins Award, which was presented to him Monday night in conjunction with the East Lake Cup. The honor recognizes a collegiate golfer best representing the values of the award: excelling in academics and engagement in the community.
A junior majoring in finance (minor in economics), Green is a member of the University's honors college and has been among the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the duration of his collegiate career. The Fairhope, Ala., native is also a two-time member of the Southeastern Conference Community Service team. His long list of community involvement includes volunteering at the University of Alabama Special Olympics and serving as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee campus collaboration chairman. Green also was presented with the Alabama Men's Golf Scholastic Achievement Award earlier this year.
The Tom Cousins Award is named after developer and philanthropist Tom Cousins, who laid out an aspirational blueprint to revitalize the East Lake community of Atlanta by providing cradle-to-college education, mixed-income housing and community wellness to break the cycle of poverty to create a holistic environment. East Lake now acts as a national model for community redevelopment through Purpose Built Communities for transforming a struggling community into a thriving neighborhood.
The East Lake Cup is being contested over three days, following the format from the final three days of the NCAA men's and women's golf national championships. Day one consists of an individual stroke play competition to determine the individual champion and seed for two days of match play competition. Alabama's men's and women's teams are both competing at the event, making it the first time in the four-year history of the tournament that the same university sent both of its teams in the same year.
Teams for the East Lake Cup are competing on the championship golf course at East Lake Golf Club, home of the TOUR Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA TOUR's FedExCup Playoffs. The East Lake Cup benefits the East Lake Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping families build better lives and children reach their highest potential through its holistic approach to community revitalization incorporating mixed-income housing, cradle-to-college education and community wellness. The East Lake Cup has raised nearly $1.5 million for the East Lake Foundation since its inception in 2015. Mercedes-Benz, CSX, Bridgestone Golf and ZipRecruiter are sponsors for the 2018 East Lake Cup.
