Crimson Tide women’s golf coach to lead U.S. collegiate squad this summer
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama head women's golf coach Mic Potter has been named the co-head coach of the United States team that will compete in the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Tuesday.
The 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup will take place June 7-9, 2019 at the Alotian Club in Roland, Ark. The 24-member U.S. team will include 12 men's and women's collegiate golfers and will face off against an international squad with a similar make-up. Potter and Vanderbilt men's coach Scott Limbaugh will serve as the U.S. co-head coaches. Michigan's Jan Dowling (Canada) and Columbus State's Mark Immelman (South Africa) will lead the International team.
"It is a tremendous honor to be named a co-head coach for the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup Team," Potter said. "I want to thank the Golf Coaches Association of America and the Women's Golf Coaches Association for considering me in the second year that female collegiate golfers will be participating in the Palmer Cup.
"Our assistant coach at the University of Alabama, Susan Rosenstiel, served as the first Women's assistant coach in 2018 for the victorious U.S. side in Evian, France. I am especially proud that Alabama will be represented on the first two Palmer Cup coaching staffs after the format changed to include female golfers."
Potter is in his 14th year with the Crimson Tide. The 2018 and 2012 Women's Golf Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Potter has won three SEC championships, four NCAA Regional titles and the 2012 NCAA championship. He has led the Tide to 13 NCAA Championships appearances during his tenure in Tuscaloosa.
Potter has coached 44 WGCA All-Americans in his career at Alabama and Furman, 15 conference players of the year, 73 all-conference honorees, one NCAA champion, two U.S. Women's Amateur champions and one British Women's Amateur champion.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament that, from 1997-2017, was a men's event that pitted the United States against Europe, with the U.S. holding and 11-9-1 advantage in those matchups. The 2018 tournament was the first to include women's players, making it the only major golf tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
"It is a fact that the game of golf, and collegiate golf in particular, would not be where it is today without Arnold Palmer championing the cause," Potter added. "No one has done more to bring our sport to the masses than Mr. Palmer. To be able to honor his name and his efforts is truly special."
The Arnold Palmer Cup is supported by Arnie's Army Charitable Foundation. The Arnold Palmer Cup provides a platform for perpetuating Arnold Palmer's commitment to youth development and the growth of amateur/collegiate golf.
