DALTON, Ga. – Senior Davis Riley fired a 4-under par 68 on Friday and is in first overall to lead the No. 2-ranked Alabama men's golf team in the opening round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate. As a team, the Crimson Tide carded an even par 288 and will enter Saturday's second round in a tie for third overall.
Riley, who is coming off a tremendous summer that saw him play on the U.S. Palmer Cup team, reach the finals of the Western Amateur and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur, was tremendous during the first 18 holes of his senior season at Alabama. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native caught fire on the back nine as he finished with a 5-under 31, including going eagle-birdie-birdie-par over his final four holes of the day. A two-time All-American, Riley holds a one-stroke lead over four other players heading into the second round of play.
Sophomore Wilson Furr picked up where he left off at the end of last season, finishing the day with four birdies compared to three bogeys to result in a 1-under par 71. He will come into Saturday in a tie for eighth overall, giving the Crimson Tide two golfers among the top 10.
Freshman Frankie Capan III played his first career collegiate tournament round on Friday and finished with a 2-over 74 on the par 72, 7,178-yard Farm Golf Club. After going 4-over on the front nine, Capan heated up by recording three birdies over his final seven holes and finished at 2-under on the back nine to end the day in a tie for 36th.
Junior Josh Sedeno (75) and sophomore Davis Shore (78) round out the Alabama golfers in 42nd and 67th, respectively. Freshman Prescott Butler, who is playing as an individual in his first career collegiate event, finished the day at 3-over par 75 and is in a tie for 42nd following the opening 18 holes.
Tennessee tops the 15-team field that features six teams ranked among the Golfweek top-25 preseason poll, finishing the day at 8-under 280. Tournament host and seventh-ranked Georgia Tech is in second with a 281. Alabama is tied with Kennesaw State for third, followed by No. 13 Clemson (290) and No. 6 Auburn (293) to round out the top six teams, respectively.
Alabama is set to tee off Saturday's second round at 8:30 a.m. CT (9:30 a.m. ET) on Friday and will be paired with Auburn and Georgia Tech.
