The Crimson Tide in 11th overall entering Wednesday’s third and final round of play
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 28/30 Alabama men's golf team bettered Monday's first round score by eight strokes, the fourth-best turnaround by any squad in the 13-team field, finishing with a 294 during Tuesday's second round of the NCAA Athens Regional. Despite the improved play, the Crimson Tide only moved up one spot on the leaderboard into 11th position overall with a 36-hole total of 596 (302-294) and is 11 shots out of the fifth-place cut line to advance to next week's NCAA National Championships.
The only other teams that had a better turnaround was No. 9 Duke and No. 40 Campbell, both of which were 13 strokes better than their first day total, while SMU improved by nine shots from day one. Tournament host and 16th-ranked Georgia is the clubhouse leader at 4-under par 564, with the Blue Devils one stroke back with a 3-under 565. Fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (570) is in third and No. 22 Liberty (582) is in fourth. There is a four-way tie for fifth place between four different teams vying for the final spot to qualify for nationals, all of which are tied at 585 after 36 holes of play.
Sophomore Wilson Furr led the Crimson Tide's charge on Tuesday by carding an even par round of 71, the best round at this year's regional play by any UA golfer. The Jackson, Miss., native finished the day with five birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey, and will enter Wednesday's final 18 holes with a 3-over 145 (74-71). Furr is tied for 24th overall with freshman Frankie Capan III, who carded a 2-over 73 after leading the Tide on Monday with a 1-over 72 to result in his 3-over par 36-hole total
Sophomore Jake DeZoort is in a tie for 49th with a 151 (75-76), while freshman Prescott Butler improved by seven strokes and finished play on Tuesday at 155 (81-74). Rounding out the UA golfers is senior Alex Green, who stepped into the Alabama lineup replacing Josh Sedeno. Green finished the day with an 83 on the par 71, 7,253-yard University of Georgia Golf Course.
The top five teams after 54 holes of play, as well as the low individual not on an advancing team, will move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Arkansas at the Blessings Golf Club, in Fayetteville, Ark. on May 24-29.
Alabama will tee of third round action at 8:55 a.m. ET (7:55 a.m. CT) off Hole No. 10 and will be paired alongside UNC Wilmington and Kentucky.
