Alabama Rowing Grabs Program Best Second-Place Finish at Big 12 Championships

The Crimson Tide finished second with 31 points in the Automatic Qualifying Team Scores
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Alabama rowing team earned its best finish in program history Sunday, grabbing second place – one point ahead of Oklahoma. Other than champion Texas, the Crimson Tide was the only other school to medal in every race.
"I am very proud of how the team performed today," UA head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "Not all the races went according to plan, but every crew showed grit and determination. We started the year with a goal and accomplished what we set out to do. I'm excited to see where our student-athletes take this program next."
Alabama opened its historic showing in the Third Varsity 4+ exhibition race, finishing second with a time of 7:40.988. The Tide would then go on to medal in each of the next five races, with a second-place finish in the Third Varsity 8+ (6:56.378), a third-place finish in the Second Varsity 4+ (7:42.468) and a second-place finish in the First Varsity 4+ (7:38.416). Alabama closed the day with two back-to-back third-place finishes in the Second Varsity 8+ (6:52.635) and the First Varsity 8+ (6:43.054).
Along with that, four Tide rowers were named to the 2019 All-Big 12 Rowing team, including sophomores Cori Guay and Jorja MacRae, junior Rebekah Stewart and senior Tressa Vitus.
"I am especially grateful for all of the seniors and the contributions they have made to the program," Putyrae added. "They were a force in almost all of our boats and we look forward to seeing them succeed as alumnae."
