TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama rising junior Wilson Furr qualified for the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held Aug. 12-18 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Furr carded a 36-hole total of 9-under par 135 (66-69) to earn one of the two automatic spots out of the Madison, Miss., qualifier which was held Tuesday, July 9, at Reunion Golf and Country Club.
- This will mark Furr's third appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship. He last competed in the 117th edition of the event in 2017, which was held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. That year, he failed to reach the match play portion of the event as he finished at 11-over par 151 (74-77). He also reached the field in 2016 when it was held in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., at Oakland Hills Country Club where he carded a 7-over par 147 (73-74) to fall short of match play.
- Sixty-seven players are fully exempt into the most prestigious championship in amateur golf, and the remaining places in the 312-player field will be filled from 36-hole sectional qualifiers being conducted by Allied Golf Associations at 93 sites between July 1 and July 24.
- Last season, Furr was the only UA golfer to compete in all 12 tournaments and led the Crimson Tide in scoring average (72.35), average vs. par (+1.06) and rounds of par or better (16) on his way to earning PING All-Region honors.
