Solid Individual Play Lifts Alabama During Second Round of Cabo Collegiate

The Crimson Tide's Canon Claycomb and Frankie Capan III each catch fire during Monday’s second round
LOS CABOS, Mexico – Sophomore Frankie Capan III and freshman Canon Claycomb each blistered the par 71, 6,807-yard Cabo del Sol's Cove Club course during Monday's second round to help the Alabama men's golf team climb into ninth position overall after 36 holes played at the Cabo Collegiate. Behind the duo's performance, the Crimson Tide ended the second round with a team score of 9-under par 275, the third-best round shot by any team in the field, to result in a 36-hole score of 5-under par 563.
Claycomb continued his stellar play at the start of his collegiate career by carding a season-best round of 5-under par 66 on Saturday. The Bowling Green, Ky, native began the day by going 6-under through his first eight holes of the day and eventually settled for the best round of his young career. Claycomb will enter Tuesday's final round of play in a tie for fourth overall with a two-day total of 6-under par 136 (70-66).
Meanwhile, Capan also had another strong day as he carded a 4-under par 67 and is in a tie for sixth place overall just a stroke back of Claycomb at 5-under par 137 (70-67). It was the second time in five rounds this spring that Capan has recorded a round of 67 which marks the seventh round in the 60s of his career.
Second Round Highlights
- Since enrolling in school in January, Claycomb has played in five total rounds through his two collegiate tournaments and has reached par or better in each outing, including both rounds in Mexico
- Claycomb finished the day with an eagle – the first of collegiate career – to go along with six birdies, a bogey and a double bogey to result in his 6-under par total
- After collecting five birdies during Sunday's opening round, Capan had five more birdies in round two to go with only one bogey, and is now tied with Claycomb for the fourth-most birdies by any individual in the field (10)
- Junior Wilson Furr is in a tie for 37th overall as he carded a 1-under par 70 on Monday giving the Tide three players who show under par on the day
- Furr will coming into the final 18 holes with a score of 1-over par 143 (73-70)
- Junior Davis Shore is in a tie for 62nd overall with a 149 (77-72), while freshman Thomas Ponder is in a tie for 65th with a 150 (75-75)
The Field
- Playing in a 15-team field that features 14 teams ranked among the top-50 in the nation, No. 42 Alabama carded the third-lowest round of the day by any team
- No. 14 Arizona is the clubhouse leader at 15-under 553 to hold a three-stroke lead over No. 20 Vanderbilt (556) and a four-stroke advantage over No. 9 Arizona State (557)
- Two teams, No. 35 Stanford and No. 47 Florida State, are in a tie for fourth overall at 559, just four strokes ahead of UA
