
Alabama Men’s Golf Falls to LSU in Opening Round of SEC Match Play Hosted by Jerry Pate

The Tide dropped its morning match to the Tigers, 2-1-2, and is in the midst of its second-round match vs. Florida when play was suspended due to darkness
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama men's golf team fell in the opening round of SEC Match Play hosted by Jerry Pate Sunday morning, dropping a 2-1-2 decision to LSU. The Crimson Tide was able to begin its second-round contest against Florida when matches were suspended due to lack of sunlight on the par 72, 7,370-yard Shoal Creek Club course.
The Tide and Gators, along with the other 12 SEC teams competing in the three-day event, will resume second-round action at 9 a.m. CT. Once all matches conclude, third-round bracket and pool play will commence shortly after the pairings get set. Play will conclude with the final 18 holes of match play taking place Tuesday.
Alabama-LSU Sunday Opening Round
- The Crimson Tide dropped its morning match to the Tigers, 2-1-2
- Thomas Ponder captured Alabama's lone point in the head-to-head contest, defeating Garrett Barber, 3&2
- Canon Claycomb and JP Cave both tied their contest against Cohen Trillo and Michael Sanders, respectively
- Tyler Lipscomb dropped a 3&2 decision to Trey Winstead, while Jones Free, who was making his Crimson Tide debut, fell to Nicholas Arcement, 4&2
Tournament Information
- After a 35-year run, the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Golf Tournament has transitioned into SEC Match Play hosted by Jerry Pate
- The field of 14 teams includes six of the top 25 teams in the NCAA Men's Golf rankings led by 7th-ranked Vanderbilt, Texas A&M (13), Georgia (14), Arkansas (15), Auburn (17), and Tennessee (22)
- The field also includes four of the top 15 PGA Tour U players competing: Sam Bennett, Texas A&M, (2); Ryan Hall, South Carolina, (4); Jackson Suber, Univ. of Mississippi, (11); and Trent Phillips, Univ. of Georgia, (12)
- Admission is free and fans are welcome to attend
