
Thomas Ponder Leads Alabama in Opening Round of Cabo Collegiate

Ponder and Claycomb finished the opening 18 holes in the top 10
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Junior Thomas Ponder fired a 4-under par 67 to lead the Alabama men's golf team in Sunday's opening round of the Cabo Collegiate and will enter the second round of play in a tie for fourth place. As a team, Alabama finished the opening 18 holes in 12th overall with a team score of 2-over par 286.
Ponder carded an eagle and five birdies throughout his opening round and sits just two strokes back from leader Brian Stark of Oklahoma State (65). Along with Ponder, Canon Claycomb also finished the day in the top-10, shooting a 3-under par 68 to tie for seventh place on the individual leaderboard. It is his fourth consecutive round in the 60s to begin the spring season.
The three-day, 54-hole event is being held on the par-71, 6,807-yard Cabo del Sol – Cove Club Course in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Crimson Tide will tee off the second round Monday morning.

- The Cowboys hold a one-stroke lead over No. 41 Florida State, who fired a 12-under par 270
- No. 16 Ole Miss is in third place with a 10-under par 274
- No. 7 Arkansas sits two strokes back of the Rebels in fourth with a 275, with No. 10 Tennessee rounding out the top five at 5-under par 279
- The 15-team tournament field is headlined by six of the top 10 teams in the nation: No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Texas Tech, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 8 Stanford and No. 10 Tennessee
