Alabama Eliminated from NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, Finishes Tied for 11th Overall

Nick Dunlap and Canon Claycomb each finish among the top-25 golfers to lead the Crimson Tide
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The No. 15-ranked Alabama men's golf team was eliminated from the 2023 NCAA Championships Sunday in the fourth and final round of stroke play. The Crimson Tide ended championship play with a 72-hole total of 1,141 (290-282-289-280) to close the event tied for 11th place overall.
The Tide's 72-hole team score is the second-lowest four-round score in team history, ranking just behind the school record of 1,129 set during the 2007 NCAA Championships.
Nick Dunlap and Canon Claycomb led the Crimson Tide throughout the week, as each finished among the top-25 individuals. Dunlap tied for 11th overall with an even par 280 (74-68-66-72), with Claycomb just behind in 22nd overall at 2-over par 282 (72-70-73-67).
The eight remaining teams will begin match play quarterfinals Tuesday morning, with the semifinals taking place that same afternoon. The 2023 National Championship match will take place Wednesday morning.
Individual Highlights
- Thomas Ponder (-4) and Canon Claycomb (-3) led the Tide in round four, combining for a total of 7-under par, carding rounds off 66 and 67, respectively

- Nick Dunlap finished among the top-15 individuals carding a 72-hole total of even par 280, earning his 10th top-20 finish in 12 tournaments played this season
- Dunlap ended the year leading the team in rounds in the 60s (17) and top-20 finishes
- Meanwhile, Claycomb earned his 15th round in the 60s this season while also collecting his team-leading 27th round (out of 36) of par or better this year
- Claycomb tied for second in par 5 scoring during championship play (-4, 4.50) while Dunlap was seventh with 16 total birdies
- Ponder's round of 66 Monday matched Dunlap for the Tide's lowest round of the tournament
- With his final 18-hole score, Ponder finished tied for 58th overall at 10-over 290 (75-74-75-66)
- Jonathan Griz tied for 70th overall with a four-day total of 293 (72-70-75-76), while JP Cave was finished with a 296 (72-74-75-76)

NCAA Men's Golf Championship Round Four Highlights
- The Tide's even par round of 280 was the fifth-lowest round by any remaining squad on day four, helping the team jump two spots to finish tied No. 1 Vanderbilt (+21)
- No. 2 North Carolina (-6) carded a score of 7-under par Monday to vault three spots into the No. 1 spot and top seed entering match play
- No. 3 Illinois (-2) and No. 9 Florida (-2) tied for second overall, with No. 8 Pepperdine (E), No. 7 Florida State (+6), No. 11 Georgia Tech (+6), No. 16 Virginia (+11) and No. 4 Arizona State (+12) rounded out the top eight teams who will compete in match play Tuesday morning
- Alabama was one of six SEC teams who made the first cut of 15 teams
- The championships will be contested on Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course for the third and final year, as the Tom Fazio-designed course will play as a 7,289-yard par 70 trek throughout tournament action
