Lemngole broke the UA record in the women’s 3,000m – in Boston – after clocking the NCAA’s fifth-fastest run all time in the event (8:41.83), while Williams extended her UA shot put record (17.79m | 58-4.50) in Fayetteville, Ark.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Breaking records is nothing new for Alabama track and field's Doris Lemngole and Mye'Joi Williams. The Crimson Tide's distance runner and thrower highlighted the final day of a busy weekend for UA that included representation across three meets, in three different states, over two days.
Two months after becoming the women's 5,000-meter collegiate leader in Boston, Lemngole returned to Beantown, this time with her sight set on the 3,000m. Running a blistering 8:41.83, the Tide's standout phenom was the only collegiate runner to place in the top seven, effectively breaking the UA school record. Lemngole finished 0.03 seconds behind Australian distance runner and Olympic finalist Lauren Ryan, who out-leaned Lemngole at the finish line. The Alabama sophomore now holds the NCAA's fifth all-time fastest performance in the event, all time, and is currently the collegiate leader in both the women's 3,000m and 5,000m as postseason approaches.
Meanwhile, a few states west, Crimson Tide women's shot putter Mye'Joi Williams made yet another edit to Alabama's record list on Saturday. Competing at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Williams extended her school-record shot put mark for the second consecutive meet, launching a 17.79-meter (58-4.50) throw on her fourth attempt.
