The Crimson Tide finished as the Session I champs after posting its second-highest road score of the season at 197.100
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite entering as the No. 8 seed, the Alabama gymnastics program rolled to a Session I victory at the Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Championships, behind a team score of 197.100. The mark became the Crimson Tide's second-highest road score of the year, as two gymnasts either bettered or tied their season-high marks, while another gymnast collected a career high.
At the end of both sessions, Alabama finished fifth overall, behind champion LSU (198.200), Oklahoma (197.925), Florida (197.825) and Missouri (197.400).
Five UA gymnasts finished as Session I winners on their respective events to further highlight the Crimson Tide's successful showing in Legacy Arena. Additionally, Alabama posted the highest rotation score of Session I on vault, bars and beam.
Alabama Head Coach Ashley Johnston Said
"I'm really proud of the team tonight. I thought they did a great job of just staying focused on the things they could do and not worry about the other teams in the building, not worry about being the afternoon [session], any of those things. They stayed really dialed in and focused on the moment. [We had] lots of season bests and that was super exciting. I think having Ryan go 9.950 [on the uneven bars], career high, was a really big deal, especially following the mistake there in the bar lineup. It wasn't a major mistake, but it was still a really important moment for [Ryan] to step in and deliver a great performance, and she did that. I think seeing Lilly nail her vault – that was such a highlight for me. She trains that way all the time. We always say 'go complete your average', and that is her average. She has warmed up a stuck-vault for about three meets in a row now, so it was really neat to see that come out in competition. Lots of other great moments along the way, but I think overall, our theme was to say 'yes' to today. It was every opportunity, whether it was pressure, whether it was if we were [leading], just say yes to the moment in front of you. We accomplished that tonight, and that was a great confidence builder as we go into NCAA Regionals in two weeks."
