The University of Alabama softball class of 2006 has grown by two more as the Crimson Tide signed Brittany Rogers of Dacula, Georgia and Jessica Smith of Pell City, Alabama.
Rogers, who is currently attending Dacula High School is an All-State and four-time All-County performer. She was named team MVP her freshman, sophomore and senior seasons and capped off her career being named Offensive Player of the Year her senior year. She also helped lead her club team, the Atlanta Vipers to a state championship and led the Georgia Fire Gold team to a second place finish at the Canada Cup and an Elite National Championship.
“Brittany brings a new dimension to our program that we have been lacking: incredible speed,” commented Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy. “She was the fastest kid we saw this summer and played a great centerfield for a very good ASA team. She has many ways she can beat you on offense. Several people told us they thought she was the top prospect in the state of Georgia. We wanted to recruit speed and she fit the bill perfectly.”
Smith, who is currently attending Pell City High School, is the second player from the state of Alabama to sign with the Crimson Tide this season (Allison Moore from Tuscaloosa). Heading into her senior season, Smith was already a four-year letter winner at Pell City and possesses tremendous power that Murphy likes. She hit 39 home runs her freshman and sophomore seasons in high school and was named team captain her junior year. She was an ASWA All-State Honorable Mention and Birmingham News All-Metro Honorable Mention in her junior year as well. She was also a member of the AHSAA North-South All-Star team and she made the Red and Blue Classic All-Tournament team.
“Jessica is one of the best utility players in the state,” said Murphy. “She has raw power that you rarely see in a high school hitter. We saw her hitting bombs as a freshman in high school and she has continued to do that every year. Jessica has the ability to play several positions and will be very valuable to us for that reason.”
Rogers and Smith join Allison Moore and Kellie Eubanks as the Tide’s signees for the 2006 season.
