Avchen is one of two available catchers on the Crimson Tide roster this season. He missed the entire fall with a broken foot. He is expected to be in the mix for duty behind the plate this spring.
PREP:
- A 2006 graduate of Bayside High School in Melbourne, Florida, where he was a three-year starter for coach Jason Burchfield
- Named 2006 Cape Coast Conference Player of the Year after leading the Bears to an 18-9 overall record
- Also named First-Team All-CCC, Bayside High School Most Valuable Player and Bayside High School Defensive Player of the Year
- Rated 165th among Baseball America’s Top 200 High School prospects
- Participated in Perfect Game National Showcase and AFLAC High School Showcase prior to his senior season
- As a senior, Avchen batted .367 with three home runs and 18 RBI
- He also recorded seven saves in nine relief appearances, surrendering just four hits and no earned runs in 10 innings
- As a junior, he batted .420 and was named a 2005 First-Team All-CCC selection as well as honorable mention all-state
- In the summer of 2005, he played for the Florida Bombers team that won the Connie Mack state championship and the World Wood Bat Association national championship
- As a sophomore, he batted .350 and earned Bayside High School Defensive MVP honors
