- Garner pitched two seasons at Faulkner State College in Bay Minette for coach Wayne Larker
- He compiled a 7-8 record and 3.88 ERA in 23 career games, with two complete games
- Garner worked 109 innings and allowed 103 hits and 47 earned runs, with 55 walks and 76 strikeouts
- As a sophomore, he posted a 3-4 record and 2.70 ERA and one complete game for the Sun Chiefs
- During his freshman season, Garner was 4-4 with a 5.30 ERA in 11 games, with one complete game
