RENO, Nev. - Just hours after its 28-point win on Tuesday, the women's basketball team (3-1) packed its bags and headed over 2,000 miles west to take part in the Nugget Classic hosted by the University of Nevada. The Crimson Tide will face No. 7/8 Louisville (4-0) on Friday at 9:00 p.m. (CST) in the second game of the day.
"I learned a long time ago that those numbers in front of a team's name don't really mean anything," said head coach Wendell Hudson. "We are looking forward to the challenge of playing a really good basketball team. We need to make sure we are playing the way a good team is supposed to play. I think if we can do that, we can do a lot, and I'm really excited about playing this game."
Alabama and Louisville have met three other times before with the Tide owning all three series wins. The last matchup between the two programs came on Nov. 23, 2001 in the Pepperdine Thanksgiving Classic where Alabama edged Louisville 90-89.
Although, as a team, the Cardinals are quite young, they boast one of the nation's best players in all-American Angel McCoughtry. The senior forward averages 18.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.5 steals per outing. In the other forward position for Louisville is classmate Candyce Bingham, who contributes 13.3 points and 6.3 boards per game. The Cardinals began their road trip out west early with a stop at Utah on Tuesday. Louisville posted a 59-48 win against the Utes.
The first game of the Nugget Classic pins Nevada up against Northern Iowa on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (CST). The winners of each game will advance to the tournament championship on Saturday, while the other two teams will play in the consolation game.
