TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's basketball team will take part in its final exhibition game before heading into regular-season play Friday, Nov. 7 when it takes on West Alabama at 6:00 p.m. (CST) in Coleman Coliseum. Admission to the event is free.
"I hope to see a lot of the things we've been working on in practice come to play," said Head Coach Wendell Hudson. "The entire team has been so focused on the things we've been doing. I'm excited about giving this team a chance to play someone else under the lights and in front of our fans."
In last season's exhibition matchup, the Crimson Tide emerged victorious over the Tigers 80-53. West Alabama returns four letterwinners from the 2007-08 squad that went 13-15 overall and 8-5 in the Gulf South Conference, an NCAA Division II league. Among the returners in Valerie Harris, who was both the Tigers leading scorer and rebounder.
Alabama opened its 2008-09 slate Wednesday with a Crimson-White Intrasquad scrimmage where the Crimson team won 57-48. Sophomore Tierney Jenkins and freshman Carmen McCoy both earned double-doubles for the game. Jenkins had a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, while McCoy pulled down a match-best 19 boards and chipped in 13 points. Three other players scored in double figures on the night with sophomore Varisia Raffington adding in 13 and junior Courtney Strauthers and freshman Ericka Russell each contributing 10 points.
