NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On the final day of play at the Fall SEC Coaches Classic, freshman Alexa Guarachi defeated sophomore Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-3 to win the No. 2 draw singles finals. The Destin, Fla., native went 3-0 on the weekend with wins against LSU sophomore Whitney Wolf, Florida sophomore Jo Mather and Wu.
"Alexa played disciplined tennis today and throughout the weekend," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "She had a great first tournament winning three quality matches. The best part about it was she really structured her points well. What an impressive start to her collegiate career."
Guarachi took down some tough competition throughout the weekend as Wu was the only Commodore player to finish the season ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top-55 in singles (No. 54) and doubles (No. 41). In addition, the Vanderbilt netter earned Second Team All-SEC honors a year ago while collecting a team-high 26 singles wins. Mather ended her freshman campaign with spots on the SEC First Team and All-Freshman Team and advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship Round of 16.
Three additional Alabama players competed in singles competition Sunday with all matches resulting in losses for the crimson and white. Senior Paulina Bigos fell 6-4, 6-3 to Kentucky sophomore Lauren Meier, while sophomore Taylor Lindsey dropped a close 6-4, 7-6(5) decision to sophomore Natalia Mayuk of Mississippi State. In addition, Kentucky sophomore Minnette Pienaar earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tide senior Alice Tunaru.
Alabama continues its fall season next weekend when it travels to take part in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sept. 18-20.
"We've still got to get more match play with pressure situations," added Mainz. "We've got a few days this week to get some work done before we head to Milwaukee. We are looking forward to making the trip up there again."
