TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team will head north for the weekend to compete in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The tournament is scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 18 and wrap up on Sunday, Sept. 20. Joining the Crimson Tide will be Marquette, Western Michigan, and Wisconsin. This is the 34th edition of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, making it the longest-running tournament for collegiate women.
"We're excited about returning to Milwaukee for our third consecutive year to play in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "It's a great format with a look at teams we do not have much exposure to during the season."
Alabama will play three doubles matches and six singles matches against each team, simulating parts of the dual format used during the spring season. The winners of a No. 1 doubles match will be awarded three points. The winners of a No. 2 doubles match will earn two points, while the winners of a No. 3 doubles match will earn one point. The winner of a No. 1 singles match will be awarded six points; winners of a No. 2 singles match will be awarded five points, with four points going to the victors in No. 3 singles matches and so on. The player who accumulates the most points in her singles matches will be declared the tournament singles winner, while the pair who claims the most points from their doubles matches will take home the tournament doubles title.
The Tide is set to face off against Wisconsin in singles competition at 11:00 a.m. (CST) and Marquette in doubles competition at 1:00 p.m. (CST) on Friday. Saturday's schedule has Alabama battling Western Michigan in doubles at 9:00 a.m. (CST) and Marquette in singles at 11:00 a.m. (CST). The Tide concludes the tournament on Sunday with doubles against Wisconsin at 9:00 a.m. (CST) and singles against Western Michigan at 11:00 a.m. (CST).
"The objective this weekend is to implement the adjustments from last weekend's tournament," added Mainz. "We competed hard in Nashville at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic, but we lacked discipline in setting up points and shot selection. At this point in the season we are not expecting to be playing our best tennis, but we need to be working our way through difficulties on the court. The goals now are to get a day better each day, take a step forward with each fall tournament and gain the confidence and momentum needed for our spring season."
All matches will take place at the Western Racquet Club, which marks the fifth year in a row the tournament has been held outdoors. Results from the tournament will be updated throughout the weekend and can be found by clicking here. All matches can also be heard live on RadioTennis.com.
