TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama softball team opened its fall slate with an 8-1 victory over Jefferson State, Friday night at the John and Ann Rhoads Softball Complex. The Crimson Tide used a four-run fourth inning to pull away for the win.
"I'm really pleased with the way Lauren Sewell finished the game for us," head coach Patrick Murphy said. "Kayla Braud was back to normal, on base all three times with three stolen bases. We had some really good at bats up and down the lineup. It was a fun game to watch."
Alabama sophomore Lauren Sewell went the distance for the Tide, striking out six, while allowing a run on two hits.
Sophomore Kayla Braud batted 3-for-3 and scored two runs, while senior Whitney Larsen collected two hits and drove in a run. Junior Cassie Reilly-Boccia also tallied two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
After Braud scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch, Reilly-Boccia drilled a double down the left field line to plate Keima Davis and give the Tide the early 2-0 lead.
Alabama would tack on two more in the third when sophomore Courtney Conley doubled home Larsen and then Sewell helped her own cause with a single up the middle that scored Conley.
The Tide did most of its damage in a four-run fourth. After a triple by Davis, Larsen brought her home on a double to left-center. Reilly-Boccia then tripled home Larsen and scored on a wild pitch.
Alabama will close out its first weekend of the fall season as it will play two games on Sunday, Oct. 17. The Tide will open the day against Alabama-Huntsville at 11 a.m., and then host Northwest Florida State at 1 p.m.
