TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, which included a victory in the singles finals for Crimson Tide junior Antonia Foehse. Overall, Alabama won eight matches during the two-day tournament.
"I think this was a good weekend for our team," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We got more quality matches. Yesterday, we had six solid wins in singles. Today, we struggled a bit, but like I told the team, sometimes it is not just about winning. The more matches we play, and the more situations we are in where we need to make changes, the better we will be as we head into Regionals."
Foehse and freshman Emily Zabor started off the day in doubles where the duo dropped a tough 9-8(2) decision to Houston's Byrony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan. Foehse and Zabor bounced back in their final doubles match of the tournament to beat Northwestern State's Amy Williams and Linda Gamo, 8-6.
In singles, it would be junior Alexa Guarachi coming off first dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to North Carolina State's Joelle Kissell. Zabor was next to finish with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Mississippi State's Khrystyna Pavlyuk. Foehse then came back from a 6-2 loss in her first set against Middle Tennessee's Carla Nava to take the next two sets, 6-0, 6-2, for the win.
"Although I started out a little slow in my match, I was able to turn it around with my attitude and fight," said Foehse. "After that first set I made the decision that I wanted to win this match, and that's exactly what I did."
Next up, Alabama heads to Birmingham, for the 2011 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships October 21 - 24.
