PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane won a pair of matches on Tuesday in the qualifying singles draw at the 2011 ITA All-American Championships. She is now one win away from reaching the main draw of the prestigious tournament.
"Mary Anne played hard today," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "She had a hard-fought first round match that really helped to get her confidence up. You could tell she played with a lot more confidence in her second match really stepping up to the ball and serving better. I was really proud of her performances today."
Macfarlane started off the day with a near three-hour battle against UNLV junior Lucia Batta. Macfarlane took the first set 6-4, before Batta came back in the second to win 7-5. The third set came down to the wire as well, but it would be Macfarlane coming out with the 6-4 victory. In her second match, she cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 decision over St. Mary's sophomore Catherine Isip.
Macfarlane will take on the winner of the Christina Ngo (Georgia Tech)/McCall Jones (UCLA) match for a chance to move on to the main draw.
