PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The women's tennis team ended its run at the 2011 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday as sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane was topped in the singles semifinals and seniors Taylor Lindsey and Courtney McLane in the doubles round of 16.
Macfarlane opened the day with a marathon three-setter outlasting Baylor senior Sona Novakova, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(6). In her second match of the day, however, it would Kansas State sophomore Petra Niedermayerova advancing past Macfarlane with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
"It was a good day," said Macfarlane. "It would have been better to win my second match, but I had a really hard-fought first round. I was really glad I got the opportunity to get as far as I did and represent the Crimson Tide."
In doubles, Lindsey and McLane matched up with Wake Forest senior Kayla Duncan junior Kathryn Talbert where the Tide pair was edged 8-6.
"I thought we played really well today with a team we were evenly matched with," said McLane. "It could have gone either way. It came down to a handful of points, and they stepped up on those points. We did the right things, but we came up a little short. We are disappointed we lost, but we did what we wanted to do."
Next up, Alabama will host its lone home tournament of the season with the annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic October 14-16, at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
