TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama head softball coach Patrick Murphy announced the signing of Andrea Hawkins (Bay City, Texas). The fleet-footed high school outfielder is considered one of the top overall athletes in this year's collegiate softball signing class.
"Andrea is one of the most athletic kids we have ever signed," Murphy said. "She will fill a huge void in our outfield next year. Her speed will remind Bama fans of former great Brittany Rogers. Not only is Andrea a great softball player, she's also a great young lady."
Hawkins heads to Alabama after participating in the Under Armour All-America game in Orlando, Fla. She has also been named to the Texas 4A All-State softball team, Houston Chronicle All-Greater Houston softball team in 2011, and District MVP for the past two years.
Bay City High School has either won outright or shared their division title the past three years and Hawkins has been named Academic All-District each of those years as well.
In 2011, Hawkins sported a batting average of .600, scored 26 runs, and was 19-for-19 in stolen bases, all of which were tops in her district. She also participated on the varsity track and volleyball teams.
She comes from an athletic family as her father Anthony Hawkins and her two uncles, Mike Hawkins and Robert Blackmon played in the National Football League.
Off the softball field, Hawkins is a member of National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Future Farmers of America. She also is a member of the Peer Assistance Leadership Service, Health Occupational Students of America and Matagorda Regional Medical Center Student Governing Board.
