TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team earned six victories, one at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and five at the Memphis Collegiate Invitational, on Friday. The Crimson Tide will continue playing at both tournaments on Saturday.
In doubles, junior Alexa Guarachi and sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane took down Georgia's Chelsey Gullickson and Lilly Kimbell, 8-4, in the first round of consolation at the Indoor Championships.
"Alexa and Mary Anne played a good match," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "I thought we got off to a good start. Georgia came back midway through the match, but we stayed aggressive and did a good job with returns. This is a good win for Alexa and Mary Anne, which will hopefully give them some confidence heading into tomorrow."
In Memphis, senior Courtney McLane and junior Antonia Foehse collected a pair of wins, first against Tulsa's Michelle Farley and Maria Sant'Anna 8-0 followed by a 9-8(4) victory over Arizona's Susan Mc Rann and Hailey Johnson. Senior Taylor Lindsey and freshman Emily Zabor also competed in doubles on Friday in Memphis where they took on Memphis' Natasha Marks and Kim Stubbe, with the Tiger pair winning 8-2.
Singles play awarded the Tide a trio of wins in Memphis, two of which were come-from-behind victories. Foehse had the most dominant win of the day, posting a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Mississippi's Paige Keating. Zabor topped Tulsa's Isaura Enrique, 6-7, 6-3, 6-7, while Lindsey won a hard-fought 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 battle against the Rebels' Iris Verboven. McLane also represented Alabama in Memphis in singles, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 match to Memphis' Alyssa Hibberd. At the National Indoors, Macfarlane took on Texas A&M's Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar falling 7-5, 6-3 to her Aggie opponent.
"Mary Anne competed hard, but her opponent was a solid, fast player who also served better today," added Mainz. "In the end of the second set, Mary Anne got her focus back, but it was a little late. She just needs to do a better job of taking care of the things she can control. It is important she walks away benefitting from this event."
