SANTIAGO, Chile - Former Crimson Tide standout Alexa Guarachi clinched the doubles title in her most recent tournament in Santiago, Chile, from Dec. 1-6, 2014, as she wrapped up her first year of the women's tennis professional circuit.
Guarachi, pairing with fellow American Lauren Albanese of Parkland, Fla., earned the 6-4, 6-1, victory over the doubles team of Fernanda Brito of Chile and Eduarda Piai of Brazil. The victory marked Guarachi's fourth doubles championship of the season and fifth overall victory.
"I've enjoyed my first year on the tour so much," Guarachi said. "I have managed to keep increasing my level of play throughout the year, which has made the biggest difference."
A world traveler, Guarachi has also secured doubles tournament titles in Turkey, as well as two titles in Norway. In a tournament in Vancouver, Canada, she claimed the singles tournament championship from July 14-20, taking down two American players, one Canadian and earning the decisive victory over Yuka Higuchi of Japan in the finals.
"College tennis at The University of Alabama definitely helped me prepare for the tour not only physically but also mentally," Guarachi added. "It has given me the confidence to compete at the highest level, and I think it especially shows in my doubles results thus far."
Due to her standout play, Guarachi has been asked to represent Chile in Fed Cup play. Her father, Fernando, a native of Santiago, Chile, also played tennis at Alabama from 1970-71.
