MOBILE, Ala. - The Crimson Tide were shut out for the first time this season, as Alabama baseball fell, 3-0, to South Alabama on Tuesday evening inside Stanky Field. With the loss, the Tide moves to 13-10 on the year.
"Give credit to South Alabama because they did what they had to do to get the win tonight," said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. "We had some missed opportunities, and we have to start capitalizing on those chances."
Alabama used five pitchers on the night and limited South Alabama to just three runs, but the Tide was unable to string together hits when they needed them, stranding 10 runners by night's end. The shutout was the first of the season for Alabama and the first time the Tide was blanked since March 1, 2014, when Louisiana-Lafayette combined for the shutout.
South Alabama got off to an early lead, scoring the game's first run in the bottom of the second. The Jaguars would then add one more run in the fourth to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the top of the sixth, Chandler Avant led off the frame with a single and was followed by consecutive walks from Georgie Salem and Mikey White to load the bases. Alabama was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, however, and ended the frame with no runs.
The Jaguars would immediately respond to the Tide threat, adding one last tally in the bottom half of the frame to push the score to 3-0, the eventual final.
Next up for Alabama is a three-game set in Gainesville with fourth-ranked Florida. The Tide and Gators will start the series on Thursday with a 6 p.m. CT first pitch. Friday's contest is also scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with the first pitch of Saturday's finale at Noon CT.
