Alabama Women’s Tennis Completes Day One at ITA Southern Regional Championships

The Tide went 3-1 in doubles play and two student-athletes moved on to the Round of 16 in the singles main draw
AUBURN, Ala. – Alabama women's tennis completed day one at the 2017 ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday at Auburn, Ala. The Crimson Tide went 3-1 in doubles play and junior Andie Daniell and senior Smith Hinton advanced to the Round of 16 after posting a perfect day in singles play.
In doubles, three pairings moved on to the Round of 16 in the main draw. The sophomore duo of Kimberley Gintrand and Luca Fabian edged out Brett/Mastilovic of McNeese State, 8-7 (5). Sophomore Jacqueline Pelletier and Hinton took down Sisti/La Fuente of Tulane, 8-5, while Daniell and freshman Kylie Moulin beat out Marins/Palment of South Alabama, 8-7 (5).
In the singles main draw, Daniell and Hinton moved past their opponents in straight sets to secure their spots in the Round 16. No. 37 Daniell dominated her two contenders by blanking Tanit Lopez of Southern Mississippi, 6-0, 6-0, in the opening round and rolling over Alexandra Shchipakina of UAB, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 32. Hinton topped Laura Fabrizii of Tulane, 6-3, 6-2, in her first match and defeated No. 91 Anna Vrbenska of Ole Miss, 6-4, 6-3, in her second.
On Saturday, Daniell is scheduled to play Hannah Brett of McNeese State and Hinton is slated to go up against Taylor Russo of Auburn.
After dropping the first match in the singles main draw, sophomores Ann Selim and Gintrand bounced back and won the first round of singles play in the consolation bracket. Selim topped Marija Mastilovic of McNeese State, 6-2, 6-4, and Gintrand defeated Tjasa Jerse of Southern Mississippi, 6-2, 6-4.
Tomorrow, Selim will play Ivone Alvaro of Tulane and Gintrand will match up against Kristina Vozniak of Mississippi State in the Round of 16 in the main draw singles consolation.
Day two of southern regionals continues tomorrow with two rounds of doubles play, starting at 8 a.m. CT, and singles play beginning at noon.
