Alabama Men’s Cross Country to Compete at NCAA Championships on Saturday

Crimson Tide making first team appearance at national meet since 2010
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's cross country team will compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The 10,000-meter race will get underway at 10:45 a.m. CT. Alabama will be making its first team appearance at the NCAA Championships since 2010.

Alabama has recorded 13 top-25 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, including three consecutive top-10 finishes in 2007 (sixth), 2008 (10th) and 2009 (third). Nine Crimson Tide runners have earned All-America honors, including German Beltran (1989), Faizal Emamaullee (1995), Tim Broe (1996, 1999), Chris Mutai (1999), David Kimani (2000, 2002), Augustus Maiyo (2007), Emmanuel Bor (2009), Tyson David (2009) and Julius Bor (2010).

The Tide entries for the NCAA Championships are seniors Andrew Bull, Garrett Bull and Evan Prizy; juniors Alfred Chelanga, Gilbert Kigen and Vincent Kiprop and sophomores Clay Austell and J.P. Brinyark.
Kigen Honored as South Region Athlete of the Year
Alabama's Gilbert Kigen was named the 2017 South Region Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced Nov. 14. He captured the NCAA South Region individual championship to lead Alabama to a third-place finish on Nov. 10 in Tuscaloosa, outkicking UA teammate Alfred Chelanga to win the 10k race in 29:44.5. Kigen is just the third Tide runner to win a regional title, joining David Kimani (2000-01-02) and Antibahs Kosgei (2015).

"We've had consistently strong performances from our top runners and that has pushed the entire team to excel, and improve to achieve this goal. Now we have an opportunity to go out and see how we stack up against the rest of the country."

The Alabama men's cross country team moved up four spots to No. 24 in the latest U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region rankings released Nov. 13.
