Cook one of only 20 candidates to earn preseason recognition for top small forward
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Alabama's Hannah Cook was selected as one of 20 candidates from across the nation to the inaugural Cheryl Miller Award watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday. The award, named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year, recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
Cook, a senior from Ozark, Mo., has led the Crimson Tide in scoring the last two seasons and finished the 2016-17 season as the Southeastern Conference's leader in every three-point category. She's started in 92 of the 99 games she's appeared in and is averaging 10.8 points and 4.7 rebounds for her career. Cook has steadily been climbing the Alabama record books in both three-point field goals made and attempted in a career, ranking sixth and seventh, respectively, heading into her final season.
The selection committee for the Cheryl Miller Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. The watch list for the 2018 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10 by mid-February. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist at www.hoophallawards.com.
The winner of the 2018 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be announced during ESPN2's telecast of the national semifinal games in the 2018 NCAA Women's Final Four in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, March 30.
