TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama women's tennis head coach Jenny Mainz announced the addition of Alba Cortina-Pou to the Crimson Tide roster for the 2017-18 season. Cortina-Pou, a Blanes, Spain native, comes to the Capstone after spending her freshman season at Texas Tech.
"We are elated that Alba will be joining our Alabama Crimson Tide family," said Mainz. "She has tremendous character and is going to be a leader on our team."
Before attending Texas Tech, Cortina-Pou achieved a No. 32 Spanish ranking. She went on to collect 14 regional championships in her home country in 2015-16, and was also a semifinalist at two WTA 10.0 doubles tournaments. She reached the quarterfinals in three U16 Tennis Europe events, which included the U16 Spanish Championship.
Cortina-Pou posted a 5-1 singles mark during the 2017 dual-match season at Texas Tech, while compiling a 15-5 doubles record in the spring season. During the 2016 fall season, she went 9-7 in singles play and 6-6 in doubles action. In her first collegiate tournament at the Midland Invitational, Cortina-Pou advanced to the Round of 16. "Cortina-Pou brings invaluable experience to our Bama Team as she's been a part of an excellent program at Texas Tech," said Mainz. "Alba's work ethic, uplifting spirit and maturity are going to be advantageous. She has a big game and will make an immediate influence in our program."
