Alabama Rowing Wins Five Medals at the Sunshine State Invitational

The Crimson Tide brings home four gold and one silver medal on the invitational’s final day

SARASOTA, Fla. – On the final day of racing at the Sunshine State Invitational, No. 18 Alabama rowing captured five medals, spanning five possible Grand Finals, walking away with four gold medals and one silver medal in Sarasota, Fla.

"We saw some solid performances this morning," UA head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We felt that the racing was going to be tight through the first thousand, so we challenged all of our crews to row a more committed third-500 and saw some good execution, especially from the eights and 2V4+."

On the first day of racing, Alabama sent five crews to today's grand finals, winning its heat in four of five possible entries.

Alabama's First Varsity 8+ started the day racing Central Florida, conference-foes Kansas and Kansas State, Louisville and SMU. The Tide picked up the win with a 6:30.20, grabbing its first gold medal of the day.

Alabama's Second Varsity 8+ also secured gold, finishing three seconds (6:40.20) ahead of second-place Kansas State. The Tide's Third Varsity 8+ was up next, grabbing another gold medal with a 6:52.50 finish.

Alabama's Third Varsity 4+ rounded up a first-place finish (7:47.90) in its Petite Final, before the Second Varsity 4+ captured the Tide's fourth and final gold medal of the day with a 7:33.10 finish.

Alabama's First Varsity 4+ wrapped up competition in Sarasota with a silver-medal finish of 7:26.09.

"We know we still have a lot of improvements to make, but we are pleased with our progress," Putyrae said.

The Tide will take a weekend off before returning to action in Clemson, S.C. for the Clemson Invitational, April 19-20.
