IRVINE, Calif. – Three Alabama softball standouts concluded their summer with the USA Softball U-19 Women's National Team with a gold-medal performance at last week's World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-19 World Cup in Irvine, Calif.
Rising sophomores Montana Fouts and Skylar Wallace and incoming freshman Lexi Kilfoyl helped guide the team to an undefeated 10-0 week over its international competition, culminating in an extra-inning victory over Japan in the gold-medal game. The U-19 team has now won three-straight WBSC titles, becoming the first team in history to do so.
Fouts threw 13.1 shutout innings over the week, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out 27. She threw a perfect game in a 15-0 victory over Botswana (Aug. 11) and earned another win against Puerto Rico (Aug. 14), allowing just one hit over 6.0 innings with 11 strikeouts.
Wallace played in all 10 games, batting .448 (13-for-29) with a team-leading 19 runs scored and six stolen bases. Six of her 13 hits went for extra bases, including a home run against China (Aug. 16) as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate. It was her second three-hit performance of the week, the first coming in aid of Fouts' perfect game over Botswana (Aug. 11) where the Woodstock, Ga., native scored three times and drove in another pair of runs.
Kilfoyl took home two wins over 7.1 scoreless innings of work, allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts. After a combined 1.1 innings against the Czech Republic (Aug. 12) and Canada (Aug. 13), she threw 3.0 innings against Chinese Taipei (Aug. 15) before entering in relief of Fouts against China (Aug. 16) with 3.0 more shutout innings. She also saw two at-bats during the week, smashing a three-run home run against Botswana (Aug. 11).
